The title of this Bible Study is simply “RISEN SAVIOR”.  Jesus was resurrected and alive today. We serve a risen Savior.

Jesus died on the cross and was witnessed by many.  The apostles were dejected, and afraid the Romans would come for them.  They hid from the public.  Then something happened that changed their lives.   All of them except John willingly became a martyr for Christ.  They were dramatically changed because, “They saw the risen Jesus.”

Theme for this study

Christ was raised from the dead with a glorified body and appeared to His disciples as the person who was with them before His crucifixion.

Have you ever had trouble returning an item without the receipt?

Why do store employees want to see a proof of purchase?

When you return unwanted or defective merchandise to a store, you’re usually asked for a receipt. The managers may extend you courtesy if you don’t have a receipt, but the proof of purchase is the surest way to prove you made the purchase from their store.

When Jesus rose from the grave, He offered convincing proof that He was alive. He left an empty tomb behind, and He appeared to those who knew Him best.

Mark 16:1-4 NLT

The empty tomb reminds us that Jesus experienced a real, physical death.

[1] Saturday evening, when the Sabbath ended, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome went out and purchased burial spices so they could anoint Jesus’ body. [2] Very early on Sunday morning, just at sunrise, they went to the tomb. [3] On the way they were asking each other, “Who will roll away the stone for us from the entrance to the tomb?” [4] But as they arrived, they looked up and saw that the stone, which was very large, had already been rolled aside.

What keeps people from examining the truth of the resurrection?

Early Sunday morning, after the Sabbath ended, Mark identified three women who headed toward Jesus’s tomb: Mary Magdalene; Mary, the mother of James the younger and Joseph and the wife of Clopas, also called Alphaeus; and Salome, the wife of Zebedee and the mother of James and John. Together, they came to finish the job of anointing Jesus’s body that had been started before the Sabbath.

First-century tombs often had a large, circular stone set in a groove and rolled across the entrance. The women worried that they would be unable to move the stone, not knowing that God had already taken care of that detail.

How do you judge whether a person’s story is believable?

The women became the first human witnesses to Jesus’s resurrection. Yet, in those days, a woman’s testimony was not considered valid. This provides a strong argument for the truth of the resurrection. If Jesus’s followers had made up the story, they would have started with witnesses who would be accepted.

What are some of the everyday fears and worries that the resurrection of Jesus should soothe?

Mark 16:5-8 NLT

The Empty Tomb Demands a Response.

[5] When they entered the tomb, they saw a young man clothed in a white robe sitting on the right side. The women were shocked, [6] but the angel said, “Don’t be alarmed. You are looking for Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He isn’t here! He is risen from the dead! Look, this is where they laid his body. [7] Now go and tell his disciples, including Peter, that Jesus is going ahead of you to Galilee. You will see him there, just as he told you before he died.” [8] The women fled from the tomb, trembling and bewildered, and they said nothing to anyone because they were too frightened.

[The most ancient manuscripts of Mark conclude with verse 16:8.  Later manuscripts add one or both of the following endings.]

[Shorter ending of Mark]

Then they briefly reported all this to Peter and his companions. Afterward Jesus himself sent them out from east to west with the sacred and unfailing message of salvation that gives eternal life. Amen.

What are some things that scare you most?

The stone was rolled away, not to let Jesus out but to allow the witnesses in. Not only did God provide a way into the tomb, but He also provided a host to explain it to them.

Angels are often described as wearing white apparel.

Matthew 28:2-3 NLT

Suddenly there was a great earthquake! For an angel of the Lord came down from heaven, rolled aside the stone, and sat on it. [3] His face shone like lightning, and his clothing was as white as snow.

John 20:12 NLT

She saw two white-robed angels, one sitting at the head and the other at the foot of the place where the body of Jesus had been lying.

Acts 1:10 NLT

As they strained to see him rising into heaven, two white-robed men suddenly stood among them.

The word “frightened” means amazed or speechless. As with most people who encountered angels, this angel started the conversation by calming the women’s fears.

The angel shared two things. First, he invited them to see the empty tomb for themselves. Second, he told them to share the news of Jesus’s resurrection with the disciples. He likely mentioned Peter specifically because the disciple was struggling with his denials of Jesus.

Why is it important to share the truth about Jesus and His resurrection?

[Longer ending of Mark verse 9-20]

MARK 16:9-14 NLT

The empty tomb calls for all people to believe.

[9] After Jesus rose from the dead early on Sunday morning, the first person who saw him was Mary Magdalene, the woman from whom he had cast out seven demons. [10] She went to the disciples, who were grieving and weeping, and told them what had happened. [11] But when she told them that Jesus was alive and she had seen him, they didn’t believe her. [12] Afterward he appeared in a different form to two of his followers who were walking from Jerusalem into the country. [13] They rushed back to tell the others, but no one believed them. [14] Still later he appeared to the eleven disciples as they were eating together. He rebuked them for their stubborn unbelief because they refused to believe those who had seen him after he had been raised from the dead.

What role does faith play in how a person views the resurrection of Jesus?

Some of the earliest manuscripts of Mark end the Gospel at verse 8, but later manuscripts included verses 9-20, which has become known as the longer ending of Mark.

Verses 9-14 are a summary of the post-resurrection appearances of Jesus. The first appearance was to Mary Magdalene. This is the appearance also mentioned in John 20:16. This is the first mention of the seven demons cast from her, which helps explain her devotion to Jesus.

Another post-resurrection appearance of Jesus was to two disciples walking down a country road. This is likely the same pair mentioned in Luke 24:13-35.

In their grief, the remaining disciples could not accept that Jesus was alive. Later, when He did appear to them, Jesus rebuked their lack of faith.
